How I Tell if I like an App

I am curious as to how many iPhone apps I have tried since I bought an iPhone this time, last year. Many positive and negative changes and improvements in the the last 12 months with both the hardware and software.

Three months ago, I jumped on the iPhone 3Gs bandwagon. Yes, stood in line on the day it was released and waited for 3 hours before getting my phone. The updates for me from my first generation iPhone was GPS, video function recording and the MMS which came a little later.

One thing I’ve noticed since the release of the iPhone 3Gs is that more and more app developers started to utilize the screen rotating function which DRIVES ME CRAZY!

I spend loots of time on my iPhone in the morning when I wake up and right before I fall asleep. But with these new apps with auto rotations, it is impossible to get anything done on my phone while laying on my side. I used to be able to reply to emails and send text messages with no problems.

Now, the Mail, and SMS apps both rotate when the iPhone is turned side ways. Productivity in bed, FAIL.

So I guess this is a request. Apple? Do you think you could make that an setting we can change? You know, for those who choose to be tied to the Internet, 24/7. Thanks.

redirecting

I love how I keep redirecting my blogs from one to another. First I redirected my photoblog to this site, now I am about to redirect you somewhere else because it seems like short random blurbs is all I have time for.

So here is the deal. My Tumblr account has become somewhat of a bookmarking blog for me. It is a mesh of photos, music, tech related links. You know you’ll enjoy it.

Muji now ships to the US!

Muji's Online Store

Muji, a Japanese retail company has always intrigued me with their minimalist style of design with their products. They now have an online store for consumers in the US and ships to all 50 states, including the outer islands. If you live in New York City, you are lucky to have four different store locations to shop at!

Muji carries a big variety of products from interior decor, stationary, electronics, etc. Products are simple and plain, without logos plastered all over. It is one of my favorite places to shop when I’m on vacation in Taiwan.

Saving Power

Over the last couple months, I’ve consciously been keeping an eye on the electric bill for my 2 bedroom apartment after I saw a sudden rise on my bill a from a few months before. I found that small steps can be take to change the power consumption in the apartment.

With a simple change of habits, I’ve noticed a $25 drop on my monthly electric bill.

First, I had switch plugs around underneath my computer table so all my electronics on the table are on one power strip with a power switch. The benefit of having a power switch makes turning things of at the end of the day much easier, instead of climbing to the back of the table and pulling off all the plugs. (After my roommate goes to sleep, I also switch off her power strip. She never remembers, so I have permission.)

Monitor brightness… I don’t know how some people work with their monitor on full brightness. May be my eyes are just very sensitive. The monitor brightness also affects the amount of power you use. Since I often leave my laptop running throughout the day, I make a point to turn off the brightness of my screen even if I was just going to the kitchen to make a coffee or have a cigarette break.

I used to only put my computer on sleep mode when I went to bed. Why? Because I hated having to wait the extra couple minutes for my computer to start. My morning ritual includes checking my email and reading the news before I leave the house. Now, I just power on my computer before I jump in the shower. No more sitting and waiting.  I will admit since having a smartphone/iPhone, my habits have changed a little.

Unplugging chargers is a habit I am still trying to break. The convenience of it there and ready to charge is awesome business. I only manage remember to unplug 4 days of the week, so I’m working on it.

Here is a list I found from PC Magazine on tips to save power.

1. Dial down your screen brightness. The brighter your screen, the more power it uses.

2. Turn off your system completely at the end of the day, instead of putting it in sleep mode.

3. If you (still) have a CRT, consider upgrading to an LCD. An LCD uses about 1/3 of the power (and causes less eyestrain to boot).

4. Forgo the screen saver. Most monitors no longer are in danger of having images burned into them, and screen savers actually use up monitor power.

5. If you’ll be away from your computer or other devices for a long period of time (say, while on vacation), consider unplugging them completely.

6. Look for the Energy Star certification when purchasing new computer systems or elec-tronic devices.

7. Enable any power-saving features on your computers, monitors, and peripherals such as printers.

From PC Magazine

Is all this work worth it, you ask? That really depends on how you value your $25.

Honolulu Twestival

Honolulu Twestival

Aloha everyone!

I am inviting you to join me at Oceans 808 next week Thursday, Feb. 12 for a night of great music, food, and drinks from 5-9 p.m.

I’m part of the volunteer organizing committee for the first-ever Honolulu Twestival, a grassroots, 100 percent volunteer driven effort to raise money for charity: water, a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Next week, Honolulu will join more than 175 international cities in hosting a Twestival to bring Hawaii’s social networking communities together in an effort to raise money for this great cause. Our pau hana-style event will feature great food, drinks, raffle, and a lineup of live Hawaii entertainment, including Guy Cruz, Anuhea, Mailani Makainai, Jama Hang, and Sunset.

Tickets are just $20 per person presale online (http://honolulu.twestival.com) and $25 at the door that night, and includes
pupu buffet, two (2) drinks, and great entertainment. Oceans will also be offering $3 drink specials throughout the night. I should also mention that 100 percent of the ticket sales go directly to charity: water. Please note that this event is only open to those 21 and older.

Why am I involved in this? For one to experience how social networking communities (like Twitter) can come together to collaborate on an international scale, but working from a local level to impact a single cause like charity: water. And second, the fact that right now, 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water opened my eyes. That’s one in six people. Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it. This is where charity: water and its partner organizations come in.

By purchasing a $20 ticket and joining us next week Thursday, you can give one person clean and safe drinking water for 20 years.
